“The Talkshop as Performance” should be a keynote address there.

Although maybe dated by now. prof Frederick Fourie also did a great job with the Redi 3x3 initiative, concluding that there are 3 strands of research on the topic and that they don't even reference each other in their publications. Also, his current research on the possible role for the informal sector in job creation. It also irritates me that every second journalist have a view on the exchange rate, unemployment etc. The biggest danger is if you don't know what you don't know. I fully agree with the point you are making about this workshop. Trevor Manual invited all the top academics to provide input to National Treasury, a few years ago. This concluded in a good academic conference with proper discussions.

Having News24 as the host, is a terribly start, in any case. It built a reputation over time as highly biased. Economists like Dawie Roodt, are probably not punting the News24 propaganda lines, and some others metioned and not mentioned by Johan wil probably also say truths that News24 won't like to dish up to its readers - hence they were not invited. Sure, some of the invited political voices will be loud and clear, but News24 will probably do what they usually prefer to do: put a positve spin on leftist views, and voices like those we hear from the ANC. Like Ramaphosa's useless National Dialogue initiative, I am highly sceptical of the News24 attempt as well. One is greatful that an attempt will be made to address probably THE most serious South-Afrcan dilemma, but without proper discussion of the many researched analyses of our huge economic structural problems, we will run a real danger of again ending up addressing symptoms instead of the core problems themselves. Some politicians like those from the DA, are well versed and informed of the real structural problems, but will those voices now being listened to, or simply be discredited again in the way News24 prefer to do? Hearing about those first-hand from economic experts, should lend more credibility and leave less room for the biased News24 to put a leftist political spin on the facts. But I sincerely hope, still, that we will all be surprised by the outcome eventually. However, building on faulty foundations is unfortunately never a good idea...

This feels like politcal virtue signaling. We don't really want to do the work, you know. As a country, we are excellente with drafting plans. Alas, they seldom lead anywhere, since few politicians want to do the dirty.

But doing this without economists is such a ridiculously laughable folly. This will only change when the ANC is no longer the biggest party. And even then...
