I visited Greece for the first time in June. It was a wonderful trip: Helanya, Dawid and I spent a week on the island of Paros and then rented a car to drive around the Peloponnese, visiting some of the famous sites of Ancient Greece, like Olympia and Delphi. Staying mainly in Airbnb places, we were warmly welcomed wherever we went: hosts often offered gifts of oranges, homemade jam or, simply, helpful advice. We ate like kings; Dawid acquired a taste for olives. And we enjoyed discovering quiet and quaint destinations off the beaten track.
But a visit to Greece was also an awakening of a different kind. Here are the three lessons I learned while driving through a country that has become stale…
